“Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds,” reads the inscription on the James Farley Post Office in New York City.

But, while weather and darkness may not halt the movement of the mail, economic realities might.

The U.S. Postal Service is supposed to run itself as a self-supporting business, but the political powers that be in Washington refuse to let it face the facts of business life – especially the fact that six-day mail delivery no longer makes economic sense.

Village Environmental Committee Seeks Members

In 2008 Nyack became a “Cool City,” joining thousands of other US municipalities in the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ Climate Protection Campaign who vowed to reduce carbon emissions below 1990 levels in line with the Kyoto Protocol. Now there are opportunities for Nyack to look at local environmental issues that have the potential to create a healthier, greener village as well as potentially save taxpayer dollars.

Mall Owner Gets Loan Extension

Syracuse-based Pyramid Companies, owner of the Palisades Mall, obtained a loan extension last week to end a financing crisis for the Rockland County super mall. Prior to last week, Pyramid had previously received three mortgage extensions for the property.

Nyack Merchant Leads Community Collection Drive

Spencer Boutin’s clothing store in Nyack, New York, has been transformed into a warehouse full of food, medical supplies, and used clothes. Where he used to have racks of trendy fashions, he now has piles of boxes marked “baby formula” and “bandages.”

Spencer is Haitian. He moved to the U.S. when he was a teenager, but still has many family members in Haiti. As soon as he heard about the earthquake there last week, he went into action.
