Orangetown Police Catch Bank Robber

August 17, 2010

Aug 17, 2010

The man-hunt only lasted three days before Orangetown police caught up with a former Nyack resident, who ran off with $14,000 from Trustco’s Nyack branch.

Richard Williams, a 39 year old resident of North Carolina, is currently being held in the Rockland County Correctional Center without bail.

Charges include first degree robbery, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and third-degree grand larceny.

Bank Heist in Nyack

August 14, 2010

TrustCo Bank’s Nyack office on Route 59 was robbed by an armed man wearing a black ski mask early this morning, using a silver hand gun.  He was a medium build black man, around 30-40 years old.

Fortunately, nobody was seriously hurt, although it was a scary experience for those working at the branch.  The man entered the bank, announced it was an armed robbery, took about $17,000, and left by foot east bound along Rte. 59.

The police department will keep the public informed as the investigation progresses. Anyone with information is asked to call the Detective Bureau at 845-359-2121.

Money Matters

August 12, 2010

By Kathy Baruffi

Earlier this year I decided to support the “Move Your Money” campaign by opening an account locally (www.moveyourmoney.info). I chose Provident Bank because the various Rockland County branch locations are convenient for me, checking is free and it is insured by the FDIC.   This is a grass roots movement urging people away from the big banks like Chase, Citibank, Wells Fargo and Bank of America, in favor of community banks.

The fee for “Hawking and Peddling” licenses was raised from $10 to $25 per vendor on June 10. This cost is included in the fee vendors pay to participate in Nyack’s street fairs, typically ranging from $125 to $300 per booth.

Every summer, thousands of shoppers visit Nyack. On Street Fair Sundays alone, as many as 25,000 people come to the village.

Broadband Initiative!

May 22, 2010

by David Carlucci

As Clarkstown’s Town Clerk, I am urging all residents to show their support for Clarkstown’s application for Google Fiber. Clarkstown has recently submitted an application to be one of the test communities for Google’s new plan to supply free broadband. Google states that their new broadband technology will be able to provide Internet connections over 100 times faster than what most Rockland residents have access to today. In fact, the speeds should border on the 1 gigabit per second range, all being channeled through a fiber connection into the home or business. In addition to revolutionizing education, medicine, business and industry, it could bring reliable, low-cost Internet access to those who could never before afford it.
