Nyack, Jan 25 -- When members of the Occupy Rockland movement drive home from their meeting tonight in Spring Valley, it's more likely that they will be listening to Aerosmith than Adele.

Although local support for Occupy Wall Street is about equal to the national average, support for the cause is greater among the graying than among young adults.

Three Nyack familes who have been friends for decades are starting a new business from scratch, making donuts from scratch. Here's a progress report on Gypsy Donut And Espresso Bar, scheduled to open in late March on N. Franklin Street in downtown Nyack.

As the second week of Gypsy Donut’s operation drew to a close we find ourselves up to our elbows in work, both literally and figuratively. Having finally gotten power and gas on into our space we started the task of cleaning and it’s a daunting task, partially because of what general contractors like to call “Site Conditions.”

Nyack, January 15 -- The three local families behind Gypsy Donut and Expresso Bar want their new Nyack business to be a community effort. The entrepreneurs are asking family, friends and village residents to support their efforts to open in late March in the space formerly occupied by Gracie's Ravioli on Franklin Street.

You might call their cause "Give me a donut... and a dream."

by George Klein, Lower Hudson Sierra Club

TODAY is the LAST DAY to submit public comments to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) on the the Revised Draft SGEIS on hydrofracking. It is imperative to demonstrate to the NYSDEC and Governor Cuomo the strength of the opposition to hydrofracking by New Yorkers.

Please do everything you can to make your voice heard louder than ever and to Governor Cuomo and the NYSDEC by visiting www.amillionfrackingletters.com and taking one minute to use the automated letter writer which will put together a letter for you that will be hand delivered to the Governor's office in Albany and if you wish, a copy will also be delivered to the NYSDEC for the public comment period which ends this Wed, January 11, 2012.

If you would like a reminder about what's wrong with hydrofracking and why residents you should be concerned, here are a few reasons why.

Until recently, painters in Nyack were second-class artisans. Nyack’s musicians could fine-tune their instruments at Long Island Drum Center. Local writers could always haunt the stacks at Pickwick Book Shop. Our thespians were able to find an audience at Elmwood Playhouse. But Edward Hopper, were he alive today, could not have bought a paintbrush in his hometown. Tracy Kachtick-Anders appreciated this irony when she came to Nyack two years ago. In September, Tracy opened the doors of Nyack’s only art supply store.

by the Chamber of Commerce of the Nyacks

The year 2011 has been challenging for businesses, families and workers across the United States. Despite this, here in Nyack, we’re fortunate to have an active and thriving downtown, many successful work-from-home entrepreneurs, several regionally significant non-profits, and thousands of energetic and engaged residents. Many of these people are members of the Chamber of Commerce of the Nyacks.

The Chamber had an exciting year, and it’s our hope that we’ve contributed to keeping Nyack a bright spot in Rockland County and in the tri-state region.

San Francisco has City Lights, New York City has the Strand and Nyack has the Pickwick Book Shop. The experience of shopping at Pickwick has changed little since it first opened in 1945. A seemingly infinite number of titles are crammed into a dense thicket of shelves. Books cover the floor and walls, arching as they approach the ceiling in ponderously tall stacks, in the way that trees canopy in a rain forest. At the center of this untamed landscape of literature is Pickwick’s owner, Jack Dunnigan.

On December 15, 1955, the TZB opened to regular traffic for the first time.
