Memorial for the “Mayor of 3rd Ave”

October 5, 2008

A group of over 30 neighbors met yesterday to share stories about how a very special cat touched their lives. I hope when I pass on that I have had such an impact on people. Here is a story written in Chester’s memory by Rosemary Serluca-Foster:

No matter what room of the house I was in, I heard the jingle of his little bell, a sound that seemed to distinguish itself from all the rest, announcing, “I’m here! Please stop whatever you are doing and spend time with me.” I was like a child on Christmas morning, racing down the steps to not only see what Santa had brought, but if I was lucky enough, to see Santa himself. That little ring was a signal to let me know my day was about to become brighter.

Chester was a social, silvery grey cat that would visit every house on the block. To many, he was thought of as a mayor, visiting homes, campaigning for love and affection. He did have a traditional home -across the street from ours, with his Mom Ruth, but it seems that he had many residences, traveling about like a little Buddha. He successfully managed to charm all of us, and became a welcome and endearing visitor. Continue reading →

Lipstick Jungle shooting in Upper Nyack

October 2, 2008

If you’ve seen movie trailers around town, it’s because NBC is shooting an episode of Lipstick Jungle, starring Dylan Clark Marshall, Sarah Hyland and Brooke Shields.

One NNaV editor commented “if the shoot was anywhere else, it would have drawn a big crowd. But it seems like almost everyone in Nyack has their own IMDB entry and doesn’t get excited about these things!”

Apparently, the Village of Upper Nyack and the Town of Clarkstown is movie/TV friendly.  And they get benefits, like overtime for the police.  Maybe the Village of Nyack should vie for some of the action.

Should we start call Clarkstown “Hollywood” on the Hudson?

Whose Afraid of Elmwood Playhouse?

May 26, 2008

The current production of Elmwood Playhouse is “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”.

This four-actor play is perfectly suited for a small theater like EPH. A 99-seat venue means no microphones and during the fight scenes you feel like the actors will fall into your lap. At one point “George” stands up on a chair and towers above you - a strange sensation for an audience member!

This a powerful adult-oriented drama and has a Nyack connection with Bill Irwin starring in the Broadway production in NYC and London. Those of you who saw him on Broadway will appreciate Elmwood’s production even more because of the intimacy. He doesn’t appear in this production but the large number of actors who showed up for the auditions (over 50) means that the four chosen are really the cream of the non-equity crop in this region, Continue reading →

This Town Should Be Going To The Dogs!

April 1, 2008

Murphy, a reporter with a nose for the facts

Nyack, NY, April 1, 2008 — If cars can park and so can teenagers, why can’t dogs park, too?

Recently, Nyack’s been in the news over two issues near and dear to the hearts (and peds) of my brethren: Riverspace redevelopment and riverfront access for my furry friends.

I’m all for the arts. I love musical theater, my two favorite tunes being “I’m So Pretty” and “I Enjoy Being a Dog.” And I love local business. Many of the gestures of Nyack’s business owners have touched me deeply. Usually right behind my right ear, where it is particularly difficult for me to scratch. Nyack is the perfect town for the arts, commerce and a celebration of community spirit.

Nyack is a dog haven, too. It’s a great place for individuals of diverse colors and creeds. And the humans are pretty interesting, too. Where I see things – approximately three feet closer to the ground than most of you – I can’t understand why we all can’t sniff out a compromise and meet everyone’s needs as we plan for the village’s future. I implore you to stop and smell the flowers (and the hydrants and the tree roots) to understand the POV that I share with just about all of “Nyack’s best friends.” Continue reading →

New to Nyack Group

March 1, 2008

There is a group call “New to Nyack” for those that have recently moved to the area.   It’s a great way to make new friends and find out what is going on in the community.  We’ve made some of our best friends through the group.  There is a monthly pot luck get together usually at somebody’s house, or at an interesting location like the Hopper House.

Check the calendar for upcoming events.
