Reality TV Dawns As Sun Sets on Fiesta Sunrise

November 13, 2008

Fiesta Sunrise, the Mexican restaurant across from the Palisades Mall on Rt 303 recently seized for not paying back taxes, opens tonight for one last time on Reality TV.

Fiesta Sunrise on Kitchen Nightmares

“On the second of two episodes of Kitchen Nightmares, Chef Gordon Ramsay pays a visit to Fiesta Sunrise in West Nyack, New York.  Fiesta Sunrise is a family-run Mexican eatery.

The restaurant is in major financial trouble and is hoping Chef Ramsay can help turn around the business.  The restaurant is being run by a man named Vic, who can be hard-headed and stubborn.  Vic is married to Yolanda and is a stepdad to Patti.

When Chef Ramsay first arrives at Fiesta Sunrise, he finds what he considers to be unsanitary conditions and shuts the restaurant down.  Will Chef Ramsay be able to get things up and running again?  Kitchen Nightmares airs on Thursday, November 13 from 9 PM to 10 PM ET/PT on FOX.”

In Clarkstown, Man (Really) Does Bite Dog

October 4, 2008

The Journal News reports than Clarkstown is putting dogs — and their owners — on a short leash. And yes, the pun was intended.

A new law limits leashes to eight feet and nuisance barking to 10 minutes between 7a and 10p and five minutes after 10p. Fines for improper canine supervision have been hiked to $20 a day for each day your dog is impounded.

The law prohibits “habitual loud howling, barking, crying, whining or conduct…that… creates a noise disturbance.” To be clear, this provision only applies to the dogs and not the local legislators who authored this bill.

Nyack Threatdown Fear #1: Quakes!

August 24, 2008

ScienceNow Daily News says the NYC area is due for an earthquake. Yes, *this* New York City.

Geoscientists at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, NY count 383 sesmic events in our area since 1677. The research was compiled as part of studies for a new Tappan Zee Bridge and re-licensing Indian Point. You have to go back to 1884 to find a quake of magnitude five or greater. But in geological terms, that’s a blink of an eye.

Perhaps this is good material for a Nyack area author with writer’s block looking for their next best seller. If you someday soon see titles like

Panic in The Palisades
,
Hudson Horror or
Nyack, The Village Under The Hudson
try not to be too surprised.

Pranking 101 at Nyack HS: OMG It’s A Giant…

June 5, 2008

It could have been a scene from Austin’s Power’s “The Spy Who Shagged Me.” Remember the sequence when a series of characters say…

Jet Pilot: Dick. Dick, take a look out of starboard.
Co-Pilot: Oh my God, it looks like a huge…
Bird-Watching Woman: Pecker.
Bird-Watching Man: [raising binoculars] Ooh, Where?
Bird-Watching Woman: Over there. What sort of bird is that? Wait, it’s not a woodpecker, it looks like someone’s…

It’s juvenile, childish, sophomoric and bound to make anyone who isn’t a complete prude laugh. And it was the second of two pranks pulled by Nyack High School seniors on Wednesday. About 100 students came to the school 8:30 Tuesday night and moved desks on an athletic field to spell out “2008.” After they left, another group of pranksters came along to produce the Austin Powers moment.

If Dogs Could Vote

May 19, 2008

An Election Commentary by Murphy The Golden Retriever about the Tues May19 School Board Election

I always say, if you’ve got it flaunt it. If I could vote, I would. Instead I just wave my very pretty tail in the face of smaller dogs. But I still wish I could vote. And have opposable thumbs. OK, maybe I’d go with the opposable thumbs first - it would make pulling the lever in the voting booth easier to do.

I saw in the paper - right before I peed on it - that only 13% of the registered humans in Nyack voted in last year’s school board election. That’s unbelievable! In my world, that would be like only 1 in 10 dogs taking the opportunity to mark their territory. We dogs feel that marking territory is an unalienable right. I hear some of the humans feel that way about marking ballots, too.

So if I were you, I’d go out on Tuesday and exercise a right that dogs all over the world and a fair number of humans wish they could, too. And if you are walking to your polling place, bring your dog. If we can’t exercise the same freedoms as you, at least we can exercise our legs.

This Town Should Be Going To The Dogs!

Murphy, a reporter with a nose for the facts

By Murphy Zornow, Golden Retriever At Large
Special Correspondent, NyackNewsAndViews.com

Nyack, NY, April 1, 2008 — If cars can park and so can teenagers, why can’t dogs park, too?

Recently, Nyack’s been in the news over two issues near and dear to the hearts (and peds) of my brethren: Riverspace redevelopment and riverfront access for my furry friends.

I’m all for the arts. I love musical theater, my two favorite tunes being “I’m So Pretty” and “I Enjoy Being a Dog.” And I love local business. Many of the gestures of Nyack’s business owners have touched me deeply. Usually right behind my right ear, where it is particularly difficult for me to scratch. Nyack is the perfect town for the arts, commerce and a celebration of community spirit.

Nyack is a dog haven, too. It’s a great place for individuals of diverse colors and creeds. And the humans are pretty interesting, too. Where I see things – approximately three feet closer to the ground than most of you – I can’t understand why we all can’t sniff out a compromise and meet everyone’s needs as we plan for the village’s future. I implore you to stop and smell the flowers (and the hydrants and the tree roots) to understand the POV that I share with just about all of “Nyack’s best friends.” Continue reading →
