“Only two months up and running, Café Barcel, in Nyack, seems to have established a sweet compact with locals,” writes Alice Gabriel in the NY Times. She offers high praise for the restaurant’s buñuelos and the rest of the restaurant’s Latin fusion fare. Continue reading →

Holiday Sightings
by J.C. Brotherhood
Driving home from work on Main St. in the early morning I spied a flock of Puffing Beer Grebes harassing a female VodkaDuck in all her winter plumage. It occurred to me she wasn’t objecting very strenuously to their raucous attention.
Next to them were a couple of Rosy Billed Rum Suckers and a Scotch Hawk trying to keep warm (though by the color of the Rum Suckers beaks it didn’t appear they were in danger of freezing to death anytime soon).

Happy Thanksgiving
And a tip of the hat (if not of the hatchet) to the MTA for this LOL-able poster.
Have a Tryptophantastic day and safe travels wherever you may go.
Fall Leaves You’ve Never Seen
Autumn leaves may be pretty, but after a few hours of raking or listening to your neighbor’s leaf blower, you’ll probably agree there’s nothing funny about the phenomenon.

Where The Turkeys Can Roam
By Tina Traster
When we moved into our renovated house in late October 2005 I said to my husband, “We should host Thanksgiving this year.” We finally had a real dining room after living in our shoebox on the Upper West Side.
“No one will come,” he said.
I knew he was right. No one wants a turkey-less Thanksgiving. I resigned myself to a meal at someone else’s house, cringing at the sight of a gravy-dripping bird proudly displayed in the center of a dining room table. Continue reading →
The Perfect Trustee
Nyack Village Trustee Richard Kavesh will appoint a replacement for himself on the Village Board when he becomes Nyack’s new mayor on January 1.
Some Nyackers might be feeling like children whose parents are searching for a nanny. Much the same way Jane and Michael Banks felt before Mary Poppins arrived.
Jane and Michael wrote a letter looking for the perfect nanny. If we could hire those cute Disney kids to conduct a search for our perfect trustee, what would their criteria be? Perhaps something like this: Continue reading →

A Final Endorsement
Murphy, the former faux mayoral candidate, regular April 1st NyackNewsAndViews.com contributor and our favorite Big Dog, passed away on Oct 17.
It is with deep sadness and regret that we learn of former Mayoral candidate Murphy’s untimely death. He brought much joy and happiness to everyone who knew and loved him. It is a very sad time for the whole family especially since we all knew how much he had personally vested of himself in his neighborhood. His passing leaves a large hole that will not be so easily filled.
I guess we will never know who Murphy would have endorsed.

As Others See Us: The Senior Times
Montreal’s senior monthly is having an “oh-my-god” moment raving about The Rockland Bakery (not to be confused with a Senior Moment).
The Senior Times says “it doesn’t get any fresher than this…rugalach, cherry, pineapple, blueberry or cheese danish, babkas, bowties, crumb buns, doughnuts, black and white cookies, brownies, cakes, pies – and expect it all to be oversized, US-style.” (perhaps another clue about the shortcomings of the Canadian “single payer” system?)
Nyack’s Restaurant Row is to die for (featuring a 10- to 15-per-cent-off discount card good at 16 restaurants — even available outside of early bird special hours).

Big Dog Out Of Mayor’s Race
by Murphy
After five months of tirelessly walking the streets of Nyack looking for support for my mayoral campaign (see NyackNewsAndViews, April 1st 2009), I’m calling it quits. Which doesn’t mean I’m a quitter–I just think I can serve our community best by curling up in a corner and quitting (wait — did someone use that line earlier this summer?)
Admittedly, my campaign always faced challenges. It was hard to get 119 signatures on a petition when most of my supporters don’t have thumbs and can’t read or write.
Earthquakes and Panthers (Oh My!)
The blogosphere, that imaginary space between the stratosphere and the Dark Side of The Moon, produced two strange tales last week about wild animals and future acts of god in our corner of the Lower Hudson Valley.
The mysterious wild animal known as the Piermont Panther has reappeared. It was first seen on the TrackinCats.com Website as early as 3/18 followed by the Journal News in April, a June sighting in the New Yorker and most recently on the Rockland Lifestyle blog. Despite the April 1 dateline, Journal News writer Ben Rubin insisted this was *not* an April Fool’s prank.
