Nyack’s Tron! and DVD are far from your traditional hip-hop duo. Most artists come from big cities but they grew up in a small village. The brothers don’t rap about peddling drugs or acts of violence. However, the process by which Norvin (Tron!) and Darian (DVD) Van Dunk have created a hip-hop network in Nyack is very similar to some of the earliest and most famous rappers.

Until recently, painters in Nyack were second-class artisans. Nyack’s musicians could fine-tune their instruments at Long Island Drum Center. Local writers could always haunt the stacks at Pickwick Book Shop. Our thespians were able to find an audience at Elmwood Playhouse. But Edward Hopper, were he alive today, could not have bought a paintbrush in his hometown. Tracy Kachtick-Anders appreciated this irony when she came to Nyack two years ago. In September, Tracy opened the doors of Nyack’s only art supply store.

On 9/11 I think of my friend John Perry. He was a NYC beat cop who was also active in the ACLU. Yes, he was a rare bird. After finishing law school and passing the bar, he had accepted a position at a law firm and on September 11, 2001, he went to One Police Plaza to hand in his badge and shield and start his life as a constitutional lawyer.

As the second the plane hit you could hear the cell phones of people walking down the street ringing as news of what happened traveled by word of mouth. I knew right away that John would be racing to the Twin Towers.

When my mother was diagnosed with cancer in 2008, I wasn't strong. I needed support and an outlet for the difficult emotions I was experiencing. I found both through the LIVESTRONG Foundation. I love the energy that surges through the participants and the volunteers at these events and wanted to bring that same experience to our beautiful Lower Hudson Valley. On September 11, 2011, we are going to do just that.

The tragic news that an eight year old boy was abducted and murdered in Brooklyn two weeks ago has many parents debating the merits of allowing children to walk unsupervised through city streets. It was the first day the boy was allowed to walk the seven blocks home alone.
