Rockland County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef has dropped his interest in running for State Comptroller and is now mulling a run against Kirsten Gillibrand for her seat in the United States Senate. But yet another career-enhancement diversion by Vanderhoef is bad news for Rockland County as our reluctant executive once again seems concerned more about his political career than the unmeasurably critical job at hand in New City.

What If The Mailman Only Rang 5 Times?
by Larry Elkin
“Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds,” reads the inscription on the James Farley Post Office in New York City.
But, while weather and darkness may not halt the movement of the mail, economic realities might.
The U.S. Postal Service is supposed to run itself as a self-supporting business, but the political powers that be in Washington refuse to let it face the facts of business life – especially the fact that six-day mail delivery no longer makes economic sense.

Rebooting the NY State Senate
by Cliff Weathers
Last fall, 30 political activists from across the State of New York met in Albany to discuss the ongoing crisis in the New York State Senate. I was called to this meeting and asked to speak about the 38th State Senate District. There, we resolved that our State government is a disgrace: Senators fight over power and personal privilege to the exclusion of all else and New Yorkers suffer because of it. And we resolved to change this.

It’s Time For Dr. No To Just Say Yes
By Richard Kavesh
Congressman John Boehner (R – Ohio) has starred in the Congressional version of “Dr. No” for the past year in his role as the House Republican leader. However, I was amazed to pick up Monday’s New York Times and to find out that I actually agree with Boehner about President Obama’s goal of eliminating America’s notorious “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, which bans openly gay members in the military.

This is big news for political junkies in the area. FIOS subscribers have either have had to go without the popular news channel, or those wanting to subscribe to FIOS have delayed switching to the fiber-optic cable alternative.

Nyack Library Trustee Runoff Election
By: Roger Seiler
Due to a difference of only two votes for two candidates in the Nyack Library’s election of four trustees yesterday, two recounts of the votes were performed at the library this afternoon. The results of these recounts were that the votes for Michael Growney and Deidre O’Hagan are tied at 107.
Therefore, the Library Board will have a special meeting on Thursday evening at 6 pm to authorize the holding of a public runoff election between these two candidates for one trustee position.

by Roger Seiler
The turnout yesterday for the election of four Nyack Library trustees was the largest that the library has seen in years: 187 voters. Thanks to all who came out to vote! And thanks also to Deirdre O’Hagan whose spirited candidacy brought so much attention to this election.

Gov Chastizes Assembly and Senate
Albany, Jan 6 — If Governor David Paterson has his way, New York’s notorious pay-to-play politics and corruption will be a thing of the past. And the only thing that stands between Paterson and a change to business as usual in Albany are the senators and legislators he accuses of pay-to-play politics and corruption.
