Superblock Public Meeting Set For September

August 31, 2010

Nyack will weigh in on four different Superblock scenarios at a community meeting in September. Project feasibility consultant HR&A will present preliminary concepts of the site’s redevelopment potential at The Nyack Center on Tuesday September 14 at at 7pm.

The public meeting will attempt to find a consensus on key planning and development principles to guide any future redevelopment.  Four development alternatives, ranging in scale and use, will be used as a framework for the discussion. HR&A, the lead consultant on the project, will use the public input from this meeting as direction to finalize its analysis, and help the Village Board decide on a preferred alternative.

Regarding obtaining federal funding for a replacement Tappan Zee Bridge, Gillibrand gave her unqualified support. “We’re going to fight for it,” she said. “The Tappan Zee bridge is an important thoroughfare for the region.” She also voiced support for the commuter rapid transit (CRT) and Bus Rapid Transit parts of the plan which will increase mass transit options for NYC passengers and 287 corridor commuters.

Mayor Appoints Lorenzini to Housing Authority

August 12, 2010

Mayor Richard Kavesh appointed two new residents to the the Nyack Housing Authority: Marie Lorenzini and Cara Bristol.

———— press release ————————

I’m pleased to announce the appointment of Marie Lorenzini and Cara Bristol to the Nyack Housing Authority. Marie is a 29-year Nyack resident who has already given many years of service to the village, while Cara is working for the people of Nyack for the first time since moving here just two years ago. Here’s a bit of information about our two new NHA members.

Few people have done more for the people of Nyack than Marie Lorenzini. A former member of Nyack’s Zoning Board of Appeals and Planning Board, Marie served as a Nyack Village Trustee from 2004 – 2009. She’s a graduate of Leadership Rockland, listed in “Who’s Who of American Women,” worked for years on Nyack’s Comprehensive Master Plan, and is the Chair of Nyack’s Tappan Zee Bridge Task Force. She even finds time to work for the Soup Angels of Nyack and is the President of the advisory board of the Giving to Ghana Foundation. Marie’s term expires in April, 2012.

Cara moved to Nyack two years ago with her husband and children, now aged 3 and 5. She moved to Nyack “because of its strong sense of community and social and economic diversity,” she says. “My early exposure to different cultures enhanced my appreciation of the value of different perspectives and my understanding of how people can cooperate and build a better community.” Cara attended New York City public schools and Hunter College. She describes herself as “particularly concerned with the improvement of public spaces both in terms of beauty and safety.” Cara’s term expires in April, 2011.

Chartered by the State of New York, the Village of Nyack Housing Authority was first established in 1960, by the New York State legislature, as an institution to provide and facilitate access to affordable housing for the least financially fortunate of Nyack’s citizens. The Authority owns and operates three facilities (Waldron Terrace, Depew Manor and the Nyack Senior Center) which were built with funds and operating subsidies from New York State, and land, tax exempt status, and guaranteed services from the Village of Nyack.

Other members of the Authority include Minerva Parker, Brooke Malloy, Tenant Representatives Gail Miller and Robert Reese, and Chair Richard Gressle. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 P.M. Meetings alternate between Depew Manor and Waldron Terrace.

Affordable Homes for sale

August 3, 2010

If you go to the top of Depew Avenue, you’ll see a rare site within the Village borders: new construction of single family homes.  There are two homes being built by the Rockland Housing Action Coalition (RHAC), in partnership with the Village of Nyack.

RHAC is currently looking for qualified moderate income families to purchase these 3 bedroom/ 2 bath homes.  The price is still being finalized, depending on the collection of federal and county subsidies obtained, but they will likely be offered at about $235,000, which is extremely affordable for Nyack.  RHAC will help any interested family through the process.

Gerri Levy, RHAC’s executive director, says they planned to build three units, but one of the lots may be owned by the Thruway Authority (the ownership is unclear).

The units should be completed in October.  If you are interested, please contact RHAC at 845-708-5799.  You can also download the application by clicking HERE.

Village Board Special Meeting Tomorrow

August 2, 2010

The Village Board is meeting tomorrow for a special meeting tomorrow evening at 7pm in Village Hall.  The Board must meet immediately to avoid missing an opportunity to take advantage of federal dollars and lucky timing with some heavy equipment.

The Village will be able to clear the channel of storm debris and to clear the destroyed barge from the Marina for a greatly reduced fee utilizing the heavy equipment already in place at the Clermont property. As some of the damage is directly related to the Spring storm, Steve Knowlton and Jim Politi have met with Federal and state officials and have determined that part of the already dramatically reduced costs associated with the cleanup will be defrayed by federal disaster funds.

Merchants Protest Increased Street Fair Fees

July 23, 2010

Nyack, July 22 — The Village Board got an earful from Nyack’s merchants last night in response to increased fees for street fair vendors. The fee for “Hawking and Peddling” licenses was raised from $10 to $25 per vendor on June 10. This cost is included in the fee vendors pay to participate in Nyack’s street fairs, typically ranging from $125 to $300 per booth.

Village To Revise Flag Flying Policy

June 28, 2010

Nyack, June 28 – Nyack will create new rules limiting which flags can fly above Village Hall at their next public meeting. The village trustees will vote on a new policy to reserve this honor for only the American and POW/MIA flags when they next meet on July 8.

The Gay Pride flag flew for 17 days over Village Hall after Nyack Mayor Richard Kavesh declared June Gay Pride Month last month. Two other groups requested equal treatment and asked that their flags be hoisted above Village Hall to fly below the U.S. and POW/MIA flags.
