Nyack Marina Gets NYS Grant

February 8, 2010

by Dave Zornow

Nyack’s crumbling marina will be getting a $150,000 grant from the NY Department of State for the design and construction of a new ramp and a dock for canoes, kayaks and rowing shells.

The three-to-one matching grant is one of a dozen awards announced by New York’s Secretary of State Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez to commemorate last year’s Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial celebration. “These docks will bring people to the water and will be key elements in the revitalization efforts of [New York's] waterfront communities,” says Cortés-Vázquez.

Sailing For Sale: Petersen’s Boatyard

December 16, 2009

Editor’s Note: On Dec 17, the Upper Nyack Village Board unanimously voted to abandon a proposed zoning amendment that would have allowed residential development at Petersen’s Boatyard.

by Trina Hunn

Upper Nyack, Dec 16 — I live in Upper Nyack in the historic Van Houten Landing neighborhood and practice law in New York City. My family moved here two years ago from South Nyack and has lived in the area now for almost ten years. We love this town, its eccentricity, its deep sense of community, and its beauty. One factor that influenced us in purchasing our home in Upper Nyack is its location within walking distance to the historic Petersen’s Boatyard. We have even enjoyed the pipe dream that one day we would own a boat that would be moored steps away from our home at the boatyard.

While I admire the tenacity of the Van Houten Landing Association in fighting the proposed zoning change of Petersen’s Boatyard, and while I would prefer that the boatyard be preserved forever in its present form, I respectfully disagree with the neighborhood’s opposition to the proposed zoning change. Upper Nyack Votes No on Boat Yard

by Dave Zornow

Upper Nyack, Dec 11 — Upper Nyack is the rare community that prefers a grandfathered, industrial site to higher rateable residential homes. The majority of the 150 residents who packed the Upper Nyack Elementary School last night made it clear they were against any development that would threaten the status of the 200 year old Petersen’s Boatyard.

First Step for Memorial Park Facelift

December 7, 2009

nyack-park-plan-final-mapBy Jen White

On December 10th, the Nyack Village Board will take an enormous step toward finally improving the Villages waterfront. The Village Board, in the last meeting of both this year and this board makeup, will vote on whether to endorse the waterfront master plan, a plan that has taken almost three years to develop. This plan is the end result of four large public meetings, a number of small public meetings and is the culmination of many redraws based on public input.

The consensus plan features a much larger green space area for play, moving the parking away from the Memorial Park side of the park and over to the Marina side of the park, thus removing a large chunk of concrete that continuously leaks petro-chemicals into the Hudson. The removal of pavement is a move supported by all local and statewide environmental agencies and organizations.
