Where Have All The Shad Fish Gone?

May 23, 2008

It’s been an annual happening on the Hudson for the last thousand years. The shad run has been a welcome sign of spring since the Lenape Indians lived on the Hudson’s shores. But Riverkeeper’s 19th annual Shadfest was Shad-less last Sunday.

Going Green on the River

May 7, 2008

With the price of gas, who can afford to run a motor boat? I look around at all those motor boats still under wraps at the Marinas and think I am so glad I never got into motor boating. Continue reading →

O&R Gedney Street Gas Plant Cleanup Continues This Spring

May 6, 2008

Orange & Rockland Utilities say they have completed the first phase of cleanup at an old manufactured-gas plant site on Gedney Street in Nyack. According to O&R spokesman Mike Donovan, the land portion of the  cleanup operation was finished last September. The utility will look for possible shoreline contaminations with a followup investigation this spring. O&R has spent $14 million on the cleanup so far.

The Gedney Street facility, which operated from 1852 until 1965, is one of over 1,500 manufactured-gas plants that burned coal or petroleum to  light and heat the homes and businesses. The  process created coal tar and other byproduct contaminants that can cause cancer. The plants became obsolete in the 50’s when natural gas pipelnes were constructed.

According to O&R, the Gedney Street facility made gas from coal and oil from 1852 until 1889. The plant used both coal and oil as feedstock for the carbureted water gas process from 1890 until 1938. It served as a oil gas facility providing “peak shaving” after 1938 used only during times of peak demand.

This Town Should Be Going To The Dogs!

April 1, 2008

Murphy, a reporter with a nose for the facts

Nyack, NY, April 1, 2008 — If cars can park and so can teenagers, why can’t dogs park, too?

Recently, Nyack’s been in the news over two issues near and dear to the hearts (and peds) of my brethren: Riverspace redevelopment and riverfront access for my furry friends.

I’m all for the arts. I love musical theater, my two favorite tunes being “I’m So Pretty” and “I Enjoy Being a Dog.” And I love local business. Many of the gestures of Nyack’s business owners have touched me deeply. Usually right behind my right ear, where it is particularly difficult for me to scratch. Nyack is the perfect town for the arts, commerce and a celebration of community spirit.

Nyack is a dog haven, too. It’s a great place for individuals of diverse colors and creeds. And the humans are pretty interesting, too. Where I see things – approximately three feet closer to the ground than most of you – I can’t understand why we all can’t sniff out a compromise and meet everyone’s needs as we plan for the village’s future. I implore you to stop and smell the flowers (and the hydrants and the tree roots) to understand the POV that I share with just about all of “Nyack’s best friends.” Continue reading →

Offleash Dogs

February 29, 2008

It’s hard to co-exists sometimes, and letting dogs run free in an urbanized area is always a tough issue.

Nyack’s future waterfront

February 26, 2008

Nyack is in the process of planning the future of its waterfront.  Memorial Park is going to be redesigned and the parking area and marina to the north were purchased by the Village and designated as park land.

What do you want to see there?
