The Nyack Rotary Club celebrates their 90th anniversary on Friday with a gala event at the Nyack Seaport. Here is the story of the origins of this global charitable organization and the impact the local club has had on our village.

Nyack, Jan 9– Amidst the antique cherry armoires and marble topped side tables, Christopher’s Antiques bustled with activity in early January. The distinctive store was full of leftover holiday color offering a surprise around every corner. Five floors of eclectic home furnishings offered candy for the eyes and comfort for the soul. But soon, the iconic store on South Broadway will be colorless and quiet.

Every ornament, toy and clock at Hickory Dickory Dock tells a story. Once you pass under the canopied entrance of 43 South Broadway in Nyack, passing through a gauntlet of wind chimes, you enter a forest of handcrafted collectibles. Some of the objects invoke fairy tales, others honor folklore and some have a direct link to the customs that shaped how Christians in America celebrate Christmas.
To help ease the pain of post-Sandy recovery, the Village of Nyack has suspended all permitting fees for work related to damages caused by the superstorm that struck Southeast New York and New Jersey on Oct 29. Nyack’s residents and businesses were severely impacted by flooding, wind-blown debris, downed trees and loss of electricity in addition to lost business for merchants and lost wages for residents.

Billions are being sought for Hurricane Sandy reconstruction by the governors of New York and New Jersey and New York City’s mayor. The full dollars may not come given the federal budget deficit, the ‘€œfiscal cliff’€ stalemate and traditional congressional reluctance to assist the Northeast, but whatever funds do arrive, the worry is that the greedy already see cash in their big eyes.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo says New York State needs $42 million, Gotham’s mayor wants $15 billion and Jersey Gov. Chris Christie thinks $37 billion will do.

Nyack, Nov 23 2012 — Today is Black Friday, the busiest shopping day of the year. Which begs the question, “says who?” Turns out, no one really knows. Although you have to give a lot of credit to retailers and their publicists for making it a real holiday — and least as far as sellers and shoppers are concerned.
For many years the Friday after Thanksgiving wasn’t the busiest shopping day of the year — that honor belonged to the Saturday before Xmas. But Black Friday is a great media story on the day after Thanksgiving when news is slow. And as we learned during the just completed presidential campaign, if you repeat something enough times it takes on a truthiness kinda credibility. Retailers, much like presidential campaigns, are not going to let fact checkers dictate their destiny.
