Last week, New York State received approval from the Federal Highway Administration to build a new Tappan Zee Bridge when Washington said the TZB’s Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) was good to go. Although officials sought support from the Feds, they never bothered to ask the fish. Here’s what one of their representatives had to say in this “POV under the Zee.”

Last year we started a committee to promote using green infrastructure on public and private properties for stormwater management. Nyack’s Green Infrastructure Roundtable will work to find methods to improve the health of our village, our water system, the Hudson River and to help reduce our recurrent flooding problems.
On Saturday morning September 22 from 9-12, we’ll have a kick off meeting at Nyack Village Hall to present an overview of green infrastructure and ways we can expand our green inventory as a community to improve our properties, streets and waterways.

Environmentalists, concerned that NYS Governor Andrew Cuomo will green light a desalination plant in Haverstraw because of its job creation potential, have collected 24,000 signatures from residents opposed to the United Water initiative. The Rockland Coalition for Sustainable Water asked NYS Senator David Carlucci (Rockland-D) and Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee (D-Suffern) to deliver petitions to the governor, along with a reminder that United Water’s own documents say the desalination plant will only create 10 new construction jobs.

The Tappan Zee Bridge is a 56 year old engineering albatross that raises pollution levels, consumes taxpayer’s dollars for ongoing repairs and promotes our dependence on expensive foreign oil. Now we are now fast tracking the design and construction of a new bridge that will be economically obsolete the day it opens because it will be missing the mass transit needed to alleviate vehicular congestion and dependency on foreign fuels.

It’s 1952 all over again. Once again, the state plans to bulldoze South Nyack.
The original Tappan Zee Bridge project had a devastating effect on South Nyack, cutting it in two. The state now claims that the impacts to South Nyack of replacing the bridge are ‘€œinsignificant.’€
This is ridiculous.
Without Fed Funding, Tappan Zee Tolls Could Be $16

Nyack, Jan 27 ‘€” The NYS Department of Transportation released the Tappan Zee Bridge Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) this week and found no reason to change Governor Cuomo’s aggressive plan to start construction in 4Q 12.
Statements by a leading Hudson River environmental group and a Rockland County Assemblywoman this week offered opposing points of view on building a new Tappan Zee Bridge. Riverkeeper “expresses extreme concern” about the project, saying the revised plan doesn’t address traffic congestion and pollution and has the potential to cause needless destruction to the Hudson River. Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee (Suffern ‘€“ D) says “the governor’s expedited plan will bring us jobs, build a safer bridge that preserves mass transit options, and do it all with construction starting in one year.”
Clarkstown holds a free environmental summit of workshops, exhibits and demonstrations including a eco-mini camp for kids on Saturday March 5.
