Regret the Hour is an all-original alternative rock band formed by Nyack High School students Nate McCarthy, Ben McCarthy, Jesse Yanko, and Anders Fleming. Despite their age, the band has achieved a considerable degree of success.

Those who live in Nyack are probably used to seeing Regret the Hour’s stickers on stop signs and street corners, and hearing their music echo from local venues like Olive’s and Casa Del Sol.

Chamber Orchestra Judged “Superior” Before European Tour

It’s a little like winning the People’s Choice Awards and then winning the Oscar. Nyack High School’s Chamber Orchestra received a Superior Rating in last weekend’s National Orchestra Festival in Providence, RI finishing third out of seven elite schools in its class. Last month, the school’s music program won a prize valued at $11,000 as the top popular vote recipient in the NEMC “Music Is Life” contest.

Nyack’s Chamber Orchestra will be performing and competing in Prague and Vienna later this month in the 2013 Young Prague Festival Competition.

“Music Is Life” Vote, For Students to Win $10,000

Fri Feb 15 is the last day for the public to vote for Nyack High School’s Music Department in the national “Music Is Life.” One vote is permitted for each email address.

The Nyack High School’s Music Department has entered the National Educational Music Company’s Music is Life contest. This contest will be decided by public vote. The winner of the grand prize will receive $10,000 in musical instruments and a check for $1000 for the music program. If Nyack wins this contest, the prize will go toward the scholarship program, which, among other things like lessons, provides instruments to students whose families cannot buy or rent on their own.

Racism, Anti-Semitism In “Parade” At NHS

The fight for social justice is set to music tonight and tomorrow at Nyack high School. The NHS Drama Club presents Parade, the dramatic story of the 1913 conviction of Jewish factory owner Leo Frank for accused rape, the subsequent commutation of his sentence by Georgia’s governor and the lynch mob which broke him out of prison and put Frank to death. The curtain goes up on Fri and Sat at 8p with a 2p matinee on Sat, too.

Learning In and Out of the Classroom

After spending four years in one place, you learn many important lessons. And not all of them are in the classroom.

My friends and I often reminisce about some of the great times we had at Nyack High School. Those positive experiences occurred both in class and off campus. As freshman, I remember the newfound exhilaration that came with the freedom to walk across the street to the Golden Mushroom restaurant. With that reward also came responsibility: I needed to learn time management skills to be a more productive and independent student.

“A Small Act” in Nyack Helps An African Village

It takes a villages…to help another village. “A Small Act,” a Sundance Film Festival selection, will be presented at The Nyack Center on Friday night as a fundraiser for Maloto, a non-profit group that raises funds to support a school in Northeast Malawi in Africa.

Former Nyack High School student Mandy Berman’s “small act” was to spent three months in Malawi teaching English to students at the Mzuzu Academy.
