In Nyack, cheering for Main Street is more than just a metaphor. The state of our major commercial thoroughfare is a reliable barometer for the future prosperity of our village. Despite the bumpy economy, our Main St. is pulling off its own revival just in time for the holiday season. Here are a few bold steps and recent events, some new and some recurring that should make us all proud and hopeful.

Those that pass this sagging garage at the corner of Ackerman Place and Gedney Street and follow the arrow pointing north are privy to one of the best-kept secrets in Nyack. Once known as the Buccaneer Boat Club, the members of the Hook Mountain Yacht Club are the custodians of hidden treasure. If you are invited to navigate a short gravel drive way and round the corner of the West Shore Towers you will mount a three hundred foot dock that leads to something more valuable than the gold that Captain Kidd was alleged to have hidden in the Palisades: an unobstructed view of Hook Mountain framed only by river and sky.

If all goes according to plan, the Nyack Marina will re-open next spring with new bulkheads, renovated boat slips for seasonal’€”and perhaps transient’€”boat owners, a safer power-boat launch for day-trippers, and a new eco-dock for human-powered watercraft.
