Nyack Nov 26 — South Nyack’s entrance ramp to the Tappan Zee Bridge on South Broadway will be closed each night this week to permit deck replacement work to continue on the TZB. The Exit 10 Thruway entrance will be closed from 8p-6a Mon-Thu and from 9p-6a on Friday.

Planning to replace the longest bridge in New York State (Tappan Zee, 16,000 ft.) is not an easy task. Especially if you’re the governor and don’t know exactly where the $5.2 billion required to build a replacement will come from. So when Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that mega-millionaire art star Jeffrey Koons would be one of six people selected to sit on the committee to review bids from the three bridge design firms vying for the job, New Yorkers had mixed reactions:

The plans to fast track a new Tappan Zee Bridge don’t include any of the previously promised trains or buses to ease congestion. But they do include shoulders and a dedicated lane for emergencies — be they political or otherwise.
If you need to cross the bridge during Thanksgiving Travel Time, you can get a good idea of what’s in store for you by checking the video cameras on the bridge and the approach to the TZB. Visit thruway.ny.gov/webcams to get a glimpse of your congested holiday TZB future.

While we wait to hear if the wait to cross the bridge will ever get shorter (it won’t), here are some ways to make that turtle-paced crawl more endurable. Thes simple activities you may even begin to look forward to your stay on the TZB.
While you are waiting, you also might consider calling your Congressman, too.
If you are a fan of Lower Hudson history or the bridge that links Rockland and Westchester, “The Tappan Zee Is Falling Down” at City-Journal.com is a must read. It includes a detailed and not particularly flattering description of 1950′s NYS politics prior to bridge construction.
