Grant Valentine, who ran for NYS Senate two years ago but failed to secure enough petition signatures to get his name on the ballot, is again challenging State Senator David Carlucci for the Democratic nomination. Carlucci went on to be the Democratic nominee and defeated Rockland County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef, a Republican, for the open seat in 2010.

We all know that New York is a predominantly Democratic state, yet Republicans have maintained control of the New York State Senate for all but two of the last 48 years. Despite the fact that it’s been 20 years since a Republican won a U.S. Senate election, 28 years since a Republican presidential candidate carried the state and 38 years since Republicans had a majority in the State Assembly, the State Senate keeps a GOP majority year after year. Their secret weapon is called redistricting, and if the proposed new maps for the Senate districts pass in anything close to their current form, Republicans won’t be losing their majority any time soon.

Rockland County, October 16 — Gubernatorial candidate and NY State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has endorsed fellow Democrat David Carlucci for the NY State 38th Senate District seat.

New York City, July 12 — Senator Thomas Morahan, who served for 11 years representing Rockland County and Tuxedo and Warwick in Orange County in the NYS Senate, passed away today after a six month battle with leukemia. His family was beside him at New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center at 4:30p, the time of his death.
Rockland County Democratic Chairman Vince Monte predicts that Clarkstown Clerk David Carlucci will be the Democratic candidate to replace Tom Morahan in the NYS Senate.
