The Nyack Rotary Club celebrates their 90th anniversary on Friday with a gala event at the Nyack Seaport. Here is the story of the origins of this global charitable organization and the impact the local club has had on our village.

This landmark clock was a gift from the Rotary Club of Nyack. Despite an inscription at the base and a logo on the clock face, this fact is news to most of the pedestrians, protesters and village residents who use Veterans’ Park.

The design of a building announces its function. Take the towering clock and fortress architecture of the First Reformed Church of Nyack. The purpose could be deduced as public, by providing the village the service of knowing the time, and the inhabitants are promised safety inside by its imposing walls. But for the hungry, the tower is a beacon of hope. Inside the building an organization called the Soup Angels delivers food and comfort to the needy. I am probably so drawn to the tower, not only because it is an impressive object to sketch, or the humanitarian mission of the non-profit that calls it home is worthy to note in my log, but because I was once homeless.
Nyack volunteers at Soup Angels have been serving the community for the last five years with meals every Wednesday evening.
This Thanksgiving marks their sixth Come to the Table Thanksgiving meal.
