The Toll The New TZB Will Take

New York State’s taxpayers will be paying more money in taxes and tolls for a Tappan Zee Bridge that does little to reduce traffic congestion, improve transit or strengthen the Hudson Valley economy in the long-term. The US DOT will loan New York State 25 percent less than what was requested by the Thruway Authority in its loan application. As a result, the remaining $2.4 billion for the bridge project must be paid for with higher interest loans and steeper tolls.

Next TZB Step: ‘Show Me The Money’

Nyack, August 17 –If fictional super agent Jerry Maguire were to star in the Tappan Zee Bridge story, we would now be up to the scene where Cuba Gooding, Jr bursts into the room and shouts, “show me the money!”

Now that three county executives who could have blocked the project have given it a green light, paying for the new twin span bridge is the last remaining big question.

TSTC Responds To NYSDOT About New TZB

The Tri’€State Transportation Campaign, a non’€profit organization that advocates for sustainable transportation choices and policies, addressed officals from the NYS Department of Transportation on Thursday about the Tappan Zee Bridge Draft Environmental Statement at a public hearing in Westchester County.

Tri’€State has long supported the replacement of the Tappan Zee project but the current plan, without transit, is shortchanging Westchester, Rockland, and New York.

Without transit on the Tappan Zee, our region gets more of the same’€”another costly transportation project that encourages our dependence on oil, invites traffic congestion, contributes to air and water pollution, encourages sprawl, and isolates communities.
The irony of the situation is that NYSDOT felt the same’€”before October 2011 when Governor Cuomo reversed course and decided to build a bridge not to preclude transit instead of building a bridge that includes transit.

Lights, Camera… Inaction on Tappan Zee Bridge Mass Transit

Sustainable transportation advocate Dani Simons worked with StreetFilms.org to produce a five minute documentary on how the hurry-up offensive push to build a new Tappan Zee Bridge sacrificed previously promised mass transit components.

When you work on a project for ten years, and you attend scores of the public meetings about it, you get to hear a lot about what people are thinking, what’s important to them, and why. Officials from Rockland and Westchester have said that only by building transit from the start will this project relieve congestion in the I-287 Corridor and local arterials, improve air quality, achieve sustainability goals, and improve motorist travel time, throughout the region.

It came as quite a shock to them and to us when NYS Governor Cuomo decided this Fall to eliminate transit from the plans, wasting millions of dollars in state study and countless hours of public input.

Since not everyone was lucky enough (ahem) to sit through the 280 meetings on the Tappan Zee project, we decided to create a short film that captures some of the local stakeholders who have played a key role in the planning process for the project.

Mass Transit Coalition: An unHappy Tappan Zee Bridge BDay

Nyack, Dec 16 — Pity the poor Tappan Zee Bridge. How would you feel if you turned 56 and people said you were old, run down and needed to be replaced?

On December 15, 1955, the TZB opened to regular traffic for the first time. On December 15, 2011, an unlikely coalition of 11 Democratic and Republican politicians joined by 16 other pro-union, pro-environment, pro-business groups announced their opposition to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s plan to build a new Tappan Zee Bridge without mass transit.
