Tappan Zee Bridge: Governor Obi-Wan with Green Cred And Spam

Although there’s no truth to the rumor that Andrew Cuomo ends each Tappan Zee Bridge meeting with the words, ‘€œMay The Political Force Be With You,’€ he did perform a feat worthy of Obi-Wan Kenobi last week. New York’s governor used only four words to inspire the public, raise his Green Cred, subdue the press and derail organized opposition to a new Tappan Zee Bridge.

During a cabinet meeting open to the media last Wednesday, Cuomo seemed to endorse the idea of turning the current Tappan Zee Bridge into a pedestrian / bike greenway over the Hudson. ‘€œIt’s an exciting option,’€ he said.

Why Wall Street Pushed Mass Transit Off The Tappan Zee Bridge

Ever since Governor Cuomo announced a hurry-up offense to break ground on a new Tappan Zee Bridge by next Fall, transportation planners, politicians and the public have asked: what happened to the Commuter Rapid Transit (CRT) trains and the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)? The original project — priced at $16B but projected to cost as much as $20B — included mass transit and 287 road improvements, including a big fix for the 360 degree on-off-ramp at Interchange 10 in South Nyack. But the scaled back project Cuomo and the Federal Highway Administration hope to fast track is all about the bridge — and nothing more.

tzxBus.com Fall Updates

tzxBus.com has been updated to reflect recent changes made to Metro North service. The site provides an easy-to-read schedule for commuters who use the Tappan Zee Express Bus to connect to the Metro North station in Tarrytown.

There are four routes affected by this update. Additionally, Nyack’s downtown bus stop has been relocated to the Artopee Way bus shelter adjacent to the Riverspace theatre.

Transit Hopes For the TZB: Another One Bites The Bus

Nyack, Oct 30 — State, town, village and and union officials — and several hundred Rockland County residents — came to the Adler Room of the Palisades Mall last Thursday to hear the new plan for a replacement Tappan Zee Bridge. With few exceptions, most of the speakers expressed support for the project but disappointment in the lack of the previously promised mass transit components. River Village residents also learned that in addition to no mass transit, they won’t be seeing any improvements to the Exit 10 interchange in South Nyack, either.

Officials say construction on a new bridge can get started as soon as Fall 2012.

As Others See Us: Sprawl and The TZB II
